Bridal boudoir near Brussels: the gift he doesn’t expect (and the one you give yourself)

Bridal boudoir photos are intimate, elegant portraits of the bride-to-be, taken a few months before the big day. Many brides give them to their husband, as an album or a few polaroids slipped in at the right moment. But most of the women I photograph discover along the way that they’re doing it for themselves too, and above all.

I’ve been a boudoir photographer in Waterloo, near Brussels, since 2020. A wedding is one of the reasons that comes up most often when a woman writes to me, whether she lives in Brussels, elsewhere in Belgium, or is coming from abroad. Here is how it works, when to book, when to give your photos, and what you should know about the polaroid trend.

What are bridal boudoir photos?

It’s a classic boudoir session, with one extra intention: the wedding ahead. You’re photographed in lingerie, in a shirt or draped in fabric, always within the limits you choose, and some images wink at the big day.

The TikTok trend: polaroids slipped to the groom

In summer 2024, a wedding video went around TikTok. During the reception, the bridesmaids approach the groom one after another. Each one discreetly slips him a polaroid of the bride, taken during a boudoir session. The groom discovers the first photo, surprised. At the next one, he looks for his wife across the room, and she bursts out laughing. A few photos in, he gets the game and tucks them into the inside pocket of his jacket, without a word.

The video went viral, and many brides have since made it their own. What people loved wasn’t so much the photos, which nobody sees on screen. It was the complicity: the bride orchestrating it all, the friends in on the secret, and a groom realising, in the middle of the party, that he has married someone who dares.

My version, if you’d like to do it

  • We choose together the images to print in polaroid format. Images your friends can hold in their hands: they’ll see them. Keep the most intimate ones for the album, which you’ll look through together.
  • Five or six are enough. Any more, and the effect fades.
  • Entrust them to someone you trust, who hands them out and collects any left lying on a table.
  • Choose a quiet moment during the reception, when he isn’t surrounded by the whole family.

For him… or for you?

The wedding is often the trigger. You think it would make a beautiful gift. And then, during the session, something shifts: you see yourself differently. The photos become yours before they become his.

I see it almost every time, and I wrote about it in A boudoir shoot as a gift for him? Why most women do it for themselves. Give them to him if you want to. But do it for yourself first.

When should you book a boudoir session before your wedding?

Ideally two to three months before. After the session, we design your album together, and it’s delivered to your home a few weeks later: that margin lets you receive everything calmly.

In any case, avoid the last few weeks. Between fittings, final details and stress, it isn’t the moment to give yourself a day of your own.

When should you give the album? Preferably after the wedding

It’s the advice I give most often, and it surprises people. On the morning of the wedding, your husband-to-be has his mind elsewhere: the timing, the guests, his speech, the nerves. Even delighted, he may not react the way you hope.

A client told me about it afterwards. She had given her album on the morning of the wedding. He loved the gift, but he was so focused on his day that she was left a little wanting more. If she could do it again, she told me, she’d give it afterwards.

The day after, on your honeymoon, or on a quiet evening once the celebrations are over: he’ll have all the time in the world to look through it, page by page. And if you’d like a wink on the big day, that’s exactly what the polaroids are for.

What to wear for a bridal boudoir session

We start, as always, with lingerie you truly love. For a nod to the wedding, a few ideas:

  • Your wedding lingerie, the set you’ll wear under your dress. He’ll discover it twice.
  • Your veil, if you already have it. It brings a very soft transparency to the light.
  • A garter, with stockings.
  • One of his shirts, slightly too big.
  • Your engagement ring, in a detail shot, on a resting hand.

For everything else, all my ideas are in What to wear to a boudoir shoot. On the day, we look together at everything you’ve brought.

What about discretion?

Your photos stay private: nobody sees them without your written consent. At the end of the day, you choose photo by photo what may be shared, or nothing at all. If it’s a surprise, we make sure together that nothing reaches him before the right moment. More in Your privacy, your photos, your choice.

How much does a bridal boudoir session cost?

At my studio near Brussels, a session starts from €499, including hair and makeup. That’s the starting point, not the total: your photographs are chosen afterwards, as an album or a collection, and that’s where most of the investment lies. I present every option during our first call. Practical details are in Boudoir photoshoot in Brussels.
